Distinguished and Famous people from Proserpine

🏉 Paul Bowman

Paul Bowman played junior rugby league in Proserpine before becoming a North Queensland Cowboys player and life member. The town’s under-nine carnival adopted his name, giving young players a local connection with the professional game. Cowboys accounts record him returning to present medals and support the event, even during a demanding finals period for the club. In 2014 forty-four teams took part. The association therefore continues beyond a former player’s early address: it links junior football, volunteers and visiting families with someone who went through the same local pathway and kept finding time to return.

🚤 Tom McLean

Tom McLean became proprietor and licensee of the Proserpine Hotel in 1938, later taking the lease of the nearby Metropole Hotel. He also served on the shire council, becoming deputy chairman in 1940. Already interested in offering cruises to the reef and islands, he had to postpone those plans during World War II. After the war he developed Roylen Cruises from Mackay, turning practical boat knowledge and hospitality experience into a substantial tourism enterprise. Proserpine’s connection joins actual businesses with council service, placing the later cruise operator firmly within the town’s working and civic life.
